Edinburgh - The North-East View of Edinburgh Castle
With the Scottish variant of the Union Flag flying high and figures strolling on the esplanade, Edinburgh Castle dominates the city. The buildings to the left of the castle are in the suburb of Portsburgh, which was a Burgh of Barony outside the city walls of Edinburgh, Scotland from 1649-1856.
This image is taken from John Slezer's Theatrum Scotiae, but did not appear in the first edition. Theatrum Scotiae is an important record of Scottish towns, castles and palaces in the 17th century. For most of these places, it contains some of the earliest views that survive.
Theatrum Scotiae is held in the National Library of Scotland.
